Multi-Generation-House (MGH) - This popular idea was inspired by the Mother Centres.

The MGH and SOS-Mother Centre Salzgitter opened in October 2006, the first of a total of 500 multi-generation houses in Germany. The former Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Ursula von der Leyen, adopted the concept which the Mother Centres nationwide had been practicing for decades; many of the MGHs were set up as Mother Centres. Mrs van der Leyen has been appreciating the MGH Salzgitter since its foundation as an EXPO project in 1999. This model project has been the inspiration for nationwide implementation, which has received great acclaim.

Mother Centres are named in honour of the initiators of the idea. Originally, they were places set up by mothers for mothers – now they are meeting places for everyone wanting to meet others in a respectful and warm atmosphere.
